Radon Testing Services
Radon testing is an essential part of any home inspection. Radon is a naturally-occurring colorless, odorless gas that is harmless outdoors but can build up to unsafe levels indoors, especially in well-sealed homes. Because of this, homeowners and potential buyers should look for a home inspector who offers radon testing services. Testing is a straightforward process that identifies radon levels in your home so you can mitigate the gas to keep your family safe.
WHAT IS RADON
Radon gas is produced when uranium and other radioactive elements decay in the soil. Radon finds its way into homes through gaps or cracks in foundations, pipes, and other openings. No matter where you live or whether your house is new or old, radon gas may be a problem.
As radon accumulates indoors, it becomes dangerous to you and your family. Long-term exposure to radon levels of 4pCi/L or higher has been linked to an increased risk of common cancers such as lung cancer. In fact, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after cigarette smoking.
Radon testing is an easy and affordable way to keep your family and home healthy and safe. Professional radon testing services will provide the most accurate results so you can take necessary action. If your house has elevated radon levels, hire a radon mitigation company to reduce radon gas by sealing cracks and installing ventilation systems.
How does Radon Testing WORK?
At Libra Inspection, we use state-of-the-art Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM) that take radon readings every hour. We test for a minimum of 48 hours but could run the test for up to 7 days.
Typically the monitor is placed in the lowest level of the house, in an area that will not be disturbed during the testing period. One monitor can test up to 2000 square feet per foundation type. Generally, you will have your radon inspection report back to you the same day we pick up the monitor or monitors.
Testing your home for radon is an important step in protecting your family from potential health risks.
WHEN SHOULD I TEST MY HOME FOR RADON?
The best time to have your house tested for radon is before closing on the property; however, it’s never too late to order radon testing services. A baseline reading will help you notice changes in subsequent tests over time. Homes should be tested at least every three years or more often if levels are consistently high.
If your home doesn’t show dangerous radon levels, it’s still recommended to test your home for radon every 3-5 years so you can detect any changes in the levels before they become a problem. Testing for radon is an easy and affordable process that will help protect you and your family. Be sure to order radon testing services as part of any home inspection or home maintenance routine to keep your house safe.
